The City of West Burlington also reviews and approves subdivisions within two-miles of the city limits. The review of subdivisions in this two-mile jurisdiction is similar to subdivisions within the city limits. Section 170.17 (5) of the City Code provides for some modifications.

The approval process for Subdivisions consists of three stages: the submittal of a sketch plan, the preliminary plat approval process, and the final plat approval process. All subdivisions are reviewed by the Planning and Zoning Commission. After reviewing a subdivision plat, the Commission will make a recommendation for or against the subdivision to City Council. City Council will consider approving a Subdivision by Resolution and authorize the subdivision to be recorded with the Des Moines County Recorder.

Zoning also regulates what you can use your property for and what you can build on it. The basis of Zoning is to protect the health, safety, and general welfare of the community and its residents. Each property in West Burlington is designated with a zoning classification.

Crime Stoppers
Crime Stoppers is a program that involves the public, the media, and the police in the fight against crime. Unsolved crimes will be selected periodically and advertised using the news media. Anonymous cash rewards are available to persons who furnish information leading to the arrest of offenders and/or the capture of fugitives.
The Greater Burlington Area chapter of Crime Stoppers was organized in 1993 and serves Burlington, West Burlington, and Des Moines County. Crime Stoppers continues to be a very valuable tool for law enforcement.

The Crime Stoppers Board of Directors is comprised of concerned citizens of the greater Burlington area who oversee the operation of the program, and are responsible for establishing policy, raising funds and for the controlling of the amount of reward payments.

Crime Stoppers is a non-profit, private, legal entity. It is funded by the united way and by private donations. Contributions are tax deductible. No tax dollars support any part of the crime stoppers program. All board officers and other directors are non-paid volunteers. Donations are used solely for payment of rewards.

The business must be located within West Burlington, Iowa city limits, has a valid business license, up to date on all city taxes and fees and is in compliance with all city code, and is a for-profit business.

Winners are decided upon the following voting criteria; growth in taxable evaluation, job growth, community impact, facility renovation, expansion and beautification, and exceptional customer service. A committee comprising of two City of West Burlington City Council members, the Mayor, two City of West Burlington employees, a representative from the West Burlington School District, a representative from SCC, and a representative from the prior year's winning business vote on the winner using the information provided in your nomination.
